“Many things can wait; the child cannot. Now it’s the time his bones are being formed, his mind is being developed. To him we cannot say tomorrow; his name is today.” Gabriela Mistral.

This session will help participants better understand their child’s innate temperament and personality characteristics, and what shapes his or her behavior and world view. While the foundation is laid at home, as the child starts school, he or she reacts to peer pressure, teacher and community expectations and his or her own emotional state.

Participants will learn the negative impact of violence in the home, on TV and in the school or community, and the positive steps they can take to help their children be healthy and well adjusted.

How Participants Will Benefit

Participants will leave the session with a greater understanding of what shapes their children, their own role in supporting health growth and acceptable behavior. They will so be able to:

  • Identify four means—both positive and negative—to shape behavior
  • Better understand their own child’s temperament and influences through exercises.
  • Learn specific actions to support healthy growth, from leading by example to encouraging beneficial social interactions with peers.
